The paintings seen here are the product of the notion of the exhibit Shared Skin: A Stab at redirecting the notion of the self. They are the offspring of a discontented self that strives for joy, they are also my children, and the smaller pieces are, my children’s’ children. At once joyous and sorrowful, pieces of my body, spirit and environment meld into camouflaged versions of the truth. They are quilted and patterned. They reminisce of textiles, which are layered without the rules of repetition.
I painted this series using body and plant parts as well as symbols from the ancient alphabet of the Magi, each letter corresponding to a Major Arcanum from the Tarot. These have been my recipes for a personal alchemy wherein I am transformed to a state of being which is sustainable. These three elements constitute a visual language and all of its components are intermixed, there is no foreground, nor a background. All is present so that energy, lines and marks flow freely. This is an equal interchange of self and environment. I paint spontaneously yet thoughtfully weighing each subsequent application of color and pattern so that the eye may ping pong playfully throughout the piece and ultimately rest on a segment that satisfies, and lends if you will, partial truths.
